Pretreatment:
1. Let your facial hair grow out to 1/8" or 2mm usually 2-3 days of growth. For body hair, you can let it get longer if possible. Your electrologist needs enough length to grab it with a pair of tweezers.
2. If the hair gets too long in between treatments you can trim with small scissors or shave with a single blade or electric razor. DO NOT do anything that pulls hair out between appointments such as tweezing, waxing or threading.
3. Daily moisturizing is very important. It keeps the skin hydrated and helps the probe insert easily into the follicle.
4. Drink plenty of water. Keeping your skin hydrated means your follicles have plenty of saline moisture in them which is needed for the current to work well. It also minimizes discomfort during your treatment.
5. Exfoliate the day of your treatment which helps remove debris from the opening of your follicles making insertions of the probe smoother.
6. Refrain from using retinol & glycolic acid 24 hours prior and the same day of your treatment.
7. Refrain from drinking caffeinated or alcoholic beverages the day of your appointment as these will dehydrate your skin. Caffeine can also increase anxiety, making your treatment less comfortable. If you must consume caffeine, drink the minimum along with additional water to hydrate.
8.If you are being treated in a sensitive area, taking Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) or Tylenol 30-45 minutes prior to treatment can minimize discomfort.

Post Treatment:
It is normal following electrolysis for the treated area to be red and slightly swollen. Both of these conditions usually disappear in an hour or two but can last longer.
The following post-treatment care suggestions should be followed for the first 24 hours after treatment.
In general, avoid any kind of activity that would subject the treated skin to irritating conditions while it is in the healing stage. After treatment, the follicle is trying to heal from the inside out so anything that gets into the follicle that may be bacterial may have a negative response like a pimple or folliculitis (bacteria infected follicles).
More Specifically:
1. Keep the area clean with witch hazel, soap and water or other suitable antiseptic.
2. Daily moisturizing after cleaning is very important.
3. Apply ice to the treated area to reduce any swelling if necessary.
4. You can apply an antibiotic cream to help minimize infection in the treated area but it's usually not necessary.
5. Keep your hands off the area. If any scabs or tiny crusts (usually on body work) appear following treatment, tell your electrologist at your next appointment. Do not pick them off.
6. Do not use any abrasive scrubbing action on the treated areas.
7. Do not visit a tanning salon or get sunburn on the treated area for at least two days. Use sunscreen and a hat to shield your face if you'll be in the sun for a prolonged time.
8. If you have had body work, for the next 24 hours do not go in a hot tub, lake or other body of water that may harbor a lot of bacteria. The follicle is trying heal from the inside out and if anything gets into the follicle right after treatment pimple could form or folliculitis.
9. If you go to the gym or other exercise and perspire you can wipe treated area with a cotton ball and witch hazel afterwards.
9. If you have face work done and need to apply make-up the same day, the best product to use is fresh mineral makeup with a clean applicator after treatment on the face.
If any reaction occurs which appears related to your electrolysis treatment, contact your electrologist for further care instructions.
